Let’s start by understanding what is deep connection and why is important to us.
Deep connection is the type of communication that feels profoundly into our bodies; it is not necessarily pleasant or long or unclear, yet it is intentional, memorable, and has a particular context.
Many times we confuse deep connection with love or friendship, but it is much more than that; it has the potential to be profoundly meaningful for one however others might not understand the effect of what that event has caused in our life. It is not a shared experience; it is extremely personal and private even if others are there to witness it.
So what is deep connection then? Well, it is not easy to answer this question so let’s think about the elements that I described above.
Not necessarily pleasant. As an example, let’s think of a hospital while visiting a love one, someone who is sick and we know that things will not get better. We will remember that event and it will have a big impact in our lives, connecting us with our fears, and apprehensions about our own health and probably our death. Think about it, and if you had experienced something similar in your life, you will find that the memory is hidden deep into you body. This is deep connection!
I also said it is not long, well in this case I can remember contemplating a picture, or a scenery that had caused an impact so profound that I can still recall details about the experience. What that experience facilitated were questions that I had discarded in the past, but for some reason that particular day, it resonated profoundly with me. This is also deep connection!
And finally deep connection is not unclear, we know when it happens, we know it in the body and we cannot erase it. We might be confused about why provoked us, and we might need some time to digest, but we understand that something has happened to us. Once again … this is deep connection!
I also said that deep connection is intentional, by this I mean we are extremely present, paying attention and we make the deliberate decision to stay and participate in the experience.
It becomes memorable because it inserts itself in our body, because we take a mental picture with our senses and we keep it, and also it is transformed in a learning experience.
Deep connection has a context, that means it comes at a time we are able to get the best out of it, not because is good or bad, but because it makes sense in that particular setting. It allows us to see what we couldn’t see before.
Consequently, deep connection could be love and passion, could be sadness and grief, could be fear and generosity and of course many others, all these emotions or experiences have the elements mentioned above, and they all live deep within us.
Do we want deep connection? Yes, we do!
Why? Because it is the essential part of being human, of sharing the world with others, of giving and receiving as a continue act of the human condition, and because it is what makes us who we are.
I would suggest you look for deep connections in your life, be open to vulnerability and contact, be in love, be in sadness, just be and so we can will all learn from our shared humanity.
